Care that takes TRICARE and understands what military life asks of you.

Psychiatric evaluations, medication management, primary care, and same-day sick visits for service members, veterans, and the spouses and kids who serve alongside them. In person in Conroe, Texas, and by video in eight states, so a set of orders doesn't have to mean starting over.

TRICARE accepted · Self-pay $175 with sliding scale available

If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a medical or mental health emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For crisis support, call or text 988, or text HOME to 741741. Who this page is for

The rules change with your status. The care doesn't.

TRICARE's referral rules depend on which plan you hold and whether you're currently serving. Here's what each one means for getting seen here, drawn from tricare.mil and va.gov as of October 2026.

Active duty, and activated Guard and Reserve

TRICARE Prime sends active duty service members to a military hospital or clinic first. To see a civilian provider, you need a referral and pre-authorization from your primary care manager, which you can start through your PCM or the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal. Synergy accepts those referrals through TriWest. Bring the referral number and we take it from there.

Spouses, kids, and retirees under 65

On TRICARE Prime, family members and retirees can see a network mental health provider for outpatient visits without a referral. On TRICARE Select, most outpatient mental health visits don't need one either. Primary care and sick visits follow your plan's usual rules, and the front desk checks them before you come in.

Guard and Reserve between activations

Reserve Select and Retired Reserve follow the Select rules, so most outpatient mental health visits don't need a referral. When orders activate you, the active duty rules apply until they end, and the visit you already have on the calendar can be moved rather than lost.

Veterans

When VA provides your care, your VA health care team refers you to a community provider before a routine visit, and that provider has to be in VA's community care network, which Synergy is. If you're retired with Medicare and TRICARE For Life, Medicare pays first and TRICARE second. Synergy accepts Medicare, and in most cases you don't need a referral to start. Either way, self-pay is $175 per session with a sliding scale available, so a visit never has to wait on paperwork.

How TRICARE works here

Your plan decides the rules, and we read them with you.

Texas sits in TRICARE's West Region, run by TriWest since January 2025, and most of the states we cover by video sit in the East Region, run by Humana Military. Synergy is in network with both, so the same benefit applies whether you're in Conroe or on a video visit from Virginia. Referral rules are the same for a video visit as for an office visit, and so are the costs.

Before your first visit, the front desk verifies your benefits. That's where TRICARE questions get answered with your actual plan in front of us, including what a visit will cost you, instead of with a guess.

Seeing a provider outside your network without a referral means point-of-service fees on TRICARE Prime. The verification call exists to keep that from happening to you.

What to have ready

  • Your plan name. Prime, Select, Reserve Select, Retired Reserve, or For Life.
  • The DoD Benefits Number from the back of your ID card.
  • A referral or authorization number, if you're active duty or coming through VA.
  • Your pharmacy. On-base and off-base pharmacies both work.

Don't have a referral yet and think you need one? Call us first. Five minutes on the phone beats a wasted trip.

What we treat

An hour-long evaluation, from a team whose background runs through emergency and trauma medicine.

Depression, anxiety, and PTSD

New patients get a full hour for the first psychiatric evaluation, because a deployment history and a sleep history take longer than fifteen minutes to tell. Medication management follows, and when trauma-focused therapy is the right tool, that referral gets named plainly.

ADHD evaluation and treatment

A full evaluation, the $99 Qbtech screening, and medication when the diagnosis supports it. Stimulants are prescribed for patients in Texas, California, and Maryland at this time, and non-stimulants in all eight states. If you fly or your job has its own medication rules, say so at the first visit.

How the medication choice gets made →

Depression that hasn't moved

TMS and Spravato are FDA-cleared options for depression that hasn't improved with standard treatment. Both happen in the Conroe office, screening first, and the consultation is where the fit gets decided.

TMS, explained plainly →

Primary care for the whole family

Primary care, same-day sick visits when availability allows, and medical weight loss with GLP-1 support, all on one chart with the psychiatric plan. One front desk, one portal, one set of records to move when you do.

One practice, one chart →

Telehealth in eight states

Orders to another state don't have to end the care.

Video visits work from Texas, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, DC, Delaware, Washington, and California. That list covers a lot of military geography, from Hampton Roads and the National Capital Region to Tampa, San Diego, and Puget Sound. If a PCS lands you in one of them, your provider and your chart come with you.

What matters is being in a covered state when the visit starts. For TRICARE, a video visit follows the same referral rules and costs the same as an office visit. Should the move go somewhere outside those eight, the last visit before you leave can be about the handoff. One thing to plan for. Stimulants for ADHD are prescribed only in Texas, California, and Maryland at this time, so if you take one and your orders point to another state on the list, bring it up before the move.

Questions military families ask

Do I need a referral to be seen with TRICARE?

It depends on your status. Active duty service members need a referral and pre-authorization from their primary care manager to see a civilian provider. Family members and retirees on TRICARE Prime can see a network mental health provider for outpatient visits without one. TRICARE Select, Reserve Select, Retired Reserve, and For Life don't need a referral for most outpatient mental health visits. Primary care follows your plan's usual rules.

Is Synergy in the TRICARE network?

Yes, in both regions. Synergy is a network provider with TriWest in the West Region and with Humana Military in the East Region, and benefits are verified before the first visit so you know what it will cost.

Can I use VA community care here?

VA community care starts with your VA health care team, which has to refer you to a community provider before a routine visit, and the provider has to be in VA's community care network, which Synergy is. Once your VA team issues the referral, the visit can be scheduled. If that path isn't open for you, self-pay is $175 per session with a sliding scale available.

What about TRICARE For Life?

Medicare pays first and TRICARE pays second, so the provider needs to accept Medicare, which Synergy does. In most cases you don't need a referral to start care, and virtual mental health visits are covered too.

I'm about to PCS. Can I keep my provider?

A move to Texas, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, DC, Delaware, Washington, or California keeps visits going by video, as long as you're in the covered state when each one starts. Anywhere else, the visit before you leave can cover the handoff and your records.

Do you prescribe stimulants for ADHD?

Yes, for patients in Texas, California, and Maryland at this time, when the evaluation supports it. Non-stimulant options are available in all eight states. If you fly or hold a job with its own medication rules, bring it up at the first visit, since it can shape which option fits.

Does TRICARE cover a video visit?

Virtual visits are covered, with the same referral rules and the same costs as in-person care, and the provider has to be licensed where you are at visit time. Benefits are verified before the visit either way.

Book a visit, or call and say you're using TRICARE.

Pick a time in the scheduler, or call if you'd rather have someone read the plan rules with you first.
